The Freedom Writers

Mrs. Gruwell is totally a product of 21st century teacher. She handles the class patiently, being understandable, and courageous. She plays the qualities of being a channel, good communicator, futuristic, a leader, learner, good collaborator, and a venture player that made her a 21st century teacher. In the story, she had a class of which I described to be too crowded, disorganized and the type of students who are said to be rebellious as the way they dispose themselves. During this time, war among civilizations was really at stake and racism is visible and actually happened inside the classroom. Discrimination of color, nationality, and race were the worst factor for bounded interrelationship of different groups. I can say that racism has manifested in the life of every student in the movie.

In order to address those conflicts, Mrs. Gruwell employed and emphasized active participation and outdoor observation that made a student-centered classroom. With regards to the activities, she used a line to know the student experiences, the toast for change where in the students were going to toast and shared some of their experiences and the change that they are going to do. All these strategies and activities were the key for complete change in the life of the students and yield successful results.

The movie was very inspiring, I can really feel every emotion of struggles for every student in room 203, it is really difficult to deal their situations and you have to bring with you your strong will to surpass it all. I considered the movie as an eye opener, especially to me as a future educator which it makes me realized that being a good and effective teacher is not just all about molding the students to become a better one but also to let them fight on their potentials and be a hero in their own story. Give them encouragement and hope to pursue life.

Room 203 symbolizes home and hope. It really helps them a lot because in that room they truly felt and experienced the presence of a home where they can find belongingness, where anybody can express themselves, where anyone is accepted and loved.
